El-P said on Friday night that the first ever Run The Jewels show was at Roskilde a couple years back. I remember when Trackstar the DJ released the ‘Into the Wild’ Mixtape and how psyched I was. In fact, it was the album I listened to on repeat my first months in Copenhagen. When El-P was playing a show at Loppen in Christiania, I was pumped. I told all my friends, the set included Killer Mike and Trackstar and were the origins of RTJ. To my astonishment, no one wanted to come with me. Fast forward three years and now everyone is a jewel runner, and you would be an idiot to miss such a great act. We met up with Trackstar the DJ after the show as he was snagging some sandwiches from Artist Village.

Well this just calls for starting off with the sandwich question…What sandwich best describes you?

I’m going to have to think about that one. That’s a pretty interesting question. As long as it doesn’t have cheese.

You don’t eat cheese?

I’m lactose intolerant. It’s very sad. It’s crazy since I am from Wisconsin, so everybody just flips on me. My favorite sandwich is a corn beef sandwich. With some roof top level corn beef from a deli or something. But I love sandwiches. I eat a lot of them.

Do you still run?

Nah, I got back issues. It sucks, because I miss running and really miss playing basketball. That’s my favorite thing.

They have courts here, you should stay and shoot around?

Don’t even tell me that. I was so pissed, I ran into a friend at Glastonbury who asked if I was still hooping. I was like nah my back…and he was like ‘Your jumper is too good not to hoop.’ Tour life makes it tough to exercise.

So the ‘Into the Wild’ Mixtape was in collaboration with Karmaloop. What do you think of their bankruptcy issue?

I was in Boston the weekend that happened. We were at Boston Calling and I was with a homie from Karmaloop the day before all that shit went down.

Did that album kind of launch Run the Jewels?

It’s been such a beautiful process. I am a very realistic person. I am not too hyped and am like ‘We’re going to blow up the world!’ But this shit is real. It’s 100% real. They met. They loved each other as friends. They work together great as musicians. They did the tour. They were like ‘We like this, let’s make a group’. They did the group. It worked.

It must be nice to be involved in something like that?

I was with Mike before and it’s crazy to be apart of this. I never imagined to be apart of something like this. I know that if I wasn’t involved, Run the Jewels would be my favorite shit.

What’s it like having your favorite rapper also be your friend and mentor?

I mean, it’s incredible. Both of them have incredible minds and hearts and really care about the shit they talk about it. It’s great they get the platform they do since most people who get a platform that size don’t deserve it. And, these two guys make the world a better place by being famous. Where as most people who get famous make themselves worse AND the world worse.

So it’s good to reach out to people through a show like David Letterman?

It was crazy playing that show. Both times! I mean its crazy. Last time we had Boots out there. Boots is fucking amazing. Doing that on NBC, it’s just like…

Do you have any rules or superstitions you live by?

It’s a bit cliché but I really believe in only caring about the shit that you believe in. Any time artists ask for advice, I tell them that it’s that simple and corny. If you do what you care about and you don’t make it, you’re still proud and happy with what you did.

Killer Mike steps in…

Let me get a picture for your magazine. I like this magazine, man. It’s printed nice, and my son skateboards. I think he’ll like it. It’s not yearbook ad heavy like some other publications. Funny name too.
