OUT OF REACH
-An exhibition by Lil’ Shy and Joe Holbrook

Two young emerging artists from the art scene of Amsterdam await their first Danish exhibition. With combined efforts Lil’ Shy and Joe Holbrook present their new work in the show ‘Out Of Reach’ in Aarhus, Denmark.

Lil’ Shy (Paris, 1980) is a multimedia artist by heart. In her work, which goes from canvasses, photo’s, drawings and installations, she uses words to vehicle emotions and thoughts. Her typographic based work surprises by her use of fabrics and threads. In 2005 Lil’ Shy graduated Cum Laude from the Gerrit Rietveld Art Academie in Amsterdam. Since then she has participated in multiple exhibitions in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt.

Joe Holbrook (London, 1988) is a self-taught artist, coming from a graffiti background. After running into the long arm of the law Joe decided to focus on fine art. In his first year as an artist he opened with a solo show in London, a group show in Amsterdam, and a solo show in Amsterdam. In his paintings Joe Holbrook shows his ability to perfectly capture the spirit and energy of the anonymous big city nightlife with amazing detail and craft.

The exhibition is hosted by fashion label Bibi Chemnitz and organized by Amsterdam production company YOUR:OWN.

Shit I sure as hell am bummed out I’ll be missing this one. But you shouldn’t. Mulatu Astatke makes my toes itch, in the good way. Musically trained in London and schooled in the club scene of mid-’60s New York, Mulatu Astatke stands as the exceptional musical innovator of the Ethiopian groove. Starting in 1969, he created the first bands independent of the military, which had previously dominated the country’s music scene. Having immersed himself in Caribbean music, funk, jazz and Latin grooves during his lengthy stint abroad, Mulatu returned to his native land to give rise to a brand new sound. You’ve all heard the stuff from the Broken Flowers soundtrack. Below is a live bit from that:

If you’re feeling ultra curious, then check out this interview I found on the stones throw site

Here’s a plan for you for the next few days in Copenhagen. With the help of no more than a handful of dedicated local music heads and organisers, Strøm has lifted itself to become Copenhagen’s (which also means Denmark’s) leading electronic music festival. It’s just too good to ignore now. With the likes of headliners Flyer Lotus, Matthew Dear and Troy Pierce making the trip from The States, as well as numerous impressive European acts on the schedule, Strøm has truly put itself on the map internationally.

I pissed around facebook for 15 minutes and found a few flyers. Note: I didn’t piss around long enough to find them all because I’m supposed to be working but these are just some of the ones I’d like to check out. See you at the Lotus in the park.

Damn right! Look after locally produced events instead of fancy fashion parties with free champagne and 6 foot chicks with 5 foot legs. I mean. Well, ok go to both then. Unfair is gonna shake your boots, this time in their own new location up by the skatepark on Enghavevej. Click flyers for website.

Andreas Emenius’s sculpture work and installation shizzle is always cooking. He has an impressive and broad client list and a string of crazy cracker projects behind him. You have definitely encountered his stuff, be sure to check his solo exhibition out.
Opening: Thursday 06.08.09 kl 17-22 at WAS
Exhibition: 06.08.09 – 06.09.09

Chill. Actually if you’re into old housey stuff the line up at the afterparty at Rust is pretty mean. Click the upper flyer and you will fly away to another internet website.

Street Machine is older than most kids that skate! I guess when they opened I was rolling on my Powell RIP with green fluoro Gullwing trucks and pink G-bones. Back then it was all about my clear griptape (with stickers under) and doing mean aciddrops (without my tail touching) and no complys (chucking my board around and claiming it). Now it’s all about colabs, free beer and showing up at the skatepark to smoke some ciggs and drink beer.

Well the line up is longer than my mate Chris’s right arm so you should just click here for all the info you need

mwb

This one is gonna be off the hook. From the little I can remember the stubnitz boat is (if you haven’t hit it up yet) the best floating party eva!
Crazy good line up and fun for everyone, Remember to take cash for the door(the bar takes credit cards) and dress to the nines like you’re going on a love boat cruise that got timewarped into 2025! DO IT!

Bitchslap magazine, issue 10 release party

Yea! we finally made it to issue 10! So shine your dancin’ shoes cos we’re back with the Almost world famous dance contest, prizes for best outfit, mega DJ’s, some free beers and good all round bitchslap party fun. We’re blowing shit up at UNDERVAND, under Ørestad Metro Station, and just 10 mins on the metro yo! Don’t know where that is? check the Map

UNDERVAND
Kay Fiskers Plads 11. 2300 København
(under Ørestad Metro Station)

A couple of years ago Sweettalk bought Gary Huswit over and did an exclusive screening of his documentary Helvetica. It’ a great film which shows the world of type and design through the eyes of various international designers and presents an angle an otherwise un-engaged Joe Blogs may not pick up on; that type plays an ever important role in our daily lives. I got the poster. I’m going to get this one too.

Objectified is about industrial design, and the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets. It’s about the people who re-examine, re-evaluate and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. It’s about our relationship to mass-produced objects and, by extension, the people who design them.

I’m going.

To celebrate the launch of streetheart.dk, about 1000 djs, 1000 sausages, 1 skate contest, 1000 hunky dudes and 1000 girls in skimpy clothing are gathering at Nørrebro skatepark and I’m gonna be there with bells on. Streetheart is a website made by the lovely Søs and Christina who are crazy bananas about street art. I’ve never seen a site about streetart getting spons from the district council but maybe these girls should start selling advertising for us! Boom. See you there

I was up the Copenhagen Skatepark yesterday dropping off a few copies of Issue 8 to Brent Kronmueller, who we interviewed about bits of wood and other exciting topics, and who is back in town to destroy and rebuild the whole park for the CphPro in 6 weeks. Someone thrust a flyer in my hand for this skate contest on Enghaveplads this saturday. I talked briefly to Thomas Madsen from Sidewalk who is organizing the contest the other night between rib-eye steaks and beers and he told me that a huge part of the park is being re-done as we speak, moving obstacles around and sticking new ones in there. As always with Thomas’ contest it’s all about the goodtimes, and Budweiser is backing up with a shit load of beers, there’ll be meat on the grill and no doubt world champion one-wheel-manual ex pro Brent (bygge man bob) with have a sesh or two, skateboard or not. See you there!

Sweet Talk Copenhagen are throwing another event next tuesday 19th of May down at Republikken on Vesterbrogade featuring amongst others, E-types who are the bomb-diggity, local masters of type. (Check our interview with founder and type guru Jonas Hecksher in issue 9 HERE)

These events are super inspiring and always worth checking out if you’re design interested. Put together by the crew at Republikken, Candy Collective and Irish designer of the year for State Magazine, Simon Roche.

If you’re early you’ll get your hands on a limited edition print.

More here: Sweet Talk Copenhagen

Jon One is making his first appearance in Copenhagen for a solo show at Graffitigalleriet starting May 15th at 6pm. Jon will be present at the opening and so will you and I.

Check the ‘how I started interview’ film below which is probably about how he got started, who knows?

Master Fatman is throwing another fundraising party for Casa Gorda, an orphange in Rio, so get your shizzle together and support a good cause! Check the film below to get your toes tickling!

It’s this Thursday, 7th Maj. Just thing thing to wash away your hangover from MidWeek Brakes.

Possibly inspired by the killa release party we threw at Værkstedet last november, The Nord Vest Social Klub are throwing their first in a series of hot parties, just across the tracks down at Drejervej. Værkstedet is probably one of the best venues we’ve ever used and no doubt this Friday will be a banger as well. My facebook tells me there are about 7 gallery openings and 12 other decent parties to hit this friday but I can’t be bothered sticking flyers up the whole day but if you’re enthusiastic enough about free beer then you are most def sorted for this weekend.

Plenty of crap journalists would have you believe that all artists and creative people are moving out of expensive Nørrebro and heading out NordVest. It might be true, I wouldn’t know I’m not a journalist but the fact is they make it sound ‘edgy’ and ’street’ and absolutely non-intersting because they are niether edgy nor street; a term I also have difficulty understanding. Anyway, what I’m blabbing on about is no matter how many crap journalists have gotten wind of this party, it will indeed be good anyway.

Featuring bitchslap’s own Fergus Murphy (also RedBullMusicAcademy) and a bunch of other fresh cats on the line up, these new-to-the-promtion-scene kids will be drunker than you, but hopefully not for long, so check it out and perhaps it will end like ours did with random people pashing each other all over the place and us arguing with some idiots.

Always a good bash for real.

Jesus, if this is anything like the old Ghetto Rave parties then hold on to your hats. It’s the same old sweatbags behind the decks so should be worth a peek.

Pop yourself down to GalleriFedt this friday for the opening of their new group show ‘imagination’ featuring UFEX and RIKKE WINTHER.
