What appears to be a popular ‘Muk-Bang’ video (usually featuring beautiful Asian women eating) is actually a political statement from South Korean performance-artist Showry.

Muk-bang, which translates to “eating broadcasts”, is a new sensation with live streaming of ladies eating enormous amounts of food. As in, more food than you go through during your Sunday smoke-a-thon, while they’re making conversation with whoever is watching.  Some performers even make thousands of dollars doing it (which only confirms that I chose the wrong profession).

What seems to be another Muk-bang video doesn’t take long to get really freaky. Showry’s done a lot to prove a pretty important point, including rolling around in chocolate sauce, bathing in a bathtub filled with ketchup and dressing up as a mermaid and sucking on raw squids.

In an old YouTube video, Showry has explained that she wants to break the cultural stereotype that women are supposed to act sexy and cute, and especially address the over sexualization of Asian women. A necessary social commentary, considering that South Korea recently opened a sex-themed park called JeJu Loveland that’s been deemed worlds kinkiest theme park.

Food fetish mocking has gotten more attention in the past couple of months and with 68 thousand people following every post, there’s a new performance artist in the game. The Instagram page Bread Face Blog consists solely of videos with an anonymous woman known as Bread Face, sitting in a room and pressing her face downwards and into bread products. Each video is a new type of bread, including naan, tortillas and cornbread with the soft soundtrack of Drake or The Weeknd playing in the background. Bread Face seems to not only draw attention to the odd fascination with Muk-Bang but just as well to ‘crushing’, where the purpose is to arouse by crushing food, objects and sometimes small animals.

Showry’s Youtube page and work in general has not gone unnoticed with over 30 million plays and just under 2 million likes on Facebook. We especially feel a certain connection to the video above – Hot Banana approves.
