For the fourth year running, Copenhagen Skatepark Association and Royal Copenhagen Skate are proud to present CPH PRO 2010, Europe’s biggest skate contest, where the world’s best pros gather to battle over 400,000 Danish crowns. Surfer Blood

I was pretty amped to see these guys after all the hype they’ve  been getting lately, and musically they didn’t disappoint, the energy from the crowd was pretty low however, which I guess you can expect on a Thursday at 7pm when half the public haven’t showed up yet and the other half are not yet sufficiently wasted to do anything but shuffle. The band worked it,  but it was pretty obvious they weren’t getting much back from the crowd, and with the exception of the wonky legs keyboard guy getting funky with his tom and cowbell setup, it turned into a pretty  quiet show with only the single “swim” managing to get any hands at all in the air. All in all really good show, really shitty timeslot.

With a moment of time to kill I checked out Crocodiles in the Ray-Ban Unplugged “stage”  where they timewarped us back to some summery 60´s sing along place where we got all cozy until they had to finish up. It might have had something to do with the fact that the whole band had sunglasses on, or maybe that was just marketing. Either way I´d way rather buy a Crocodiles record than a pair of Raybans. So on to

The XX

Whoa! this was packed, a lot of people obviously came out for this one. Sporting less than their usual amount of shiny chains The XX got off to a decent start, I don´t know if it´s because they’ve only got 1 album out but they really know all their tracks inside out and played them impeccably. They played well, yea, but it seemed like they hadn´t warmed up until the rain started falling, and from then until the end of the show they just got better and kept giving me goosebumps until the strobing, cymbal-bashing thunder bass end of the show. Fucking great, but whoever thought of playing an XX remix as the band was still leaving the stage can suck it.

Wild Beasts

Nothing more than a quick hola, and Wild Beasts launched straight into “Booty Call”, The crowd had obviously warmed up by this point because there were hands a-waving and feet a-shuffling for the whole show. Hayden Thorpe and
Tom Fleming switched positions so often that I lost count, but so smooth that I wouldn´t have notices if I wasn´t looking at the stage. By the time they started into “Hooting and Howling” it was all fist pumping and foot stomping madness. Great show.

Another moment before The Books started so we swung by Broken Social Scene, who actually suprised me a lot and dropped a rock opus of a show with 5 guitars, lying down solos, and Owen Pallet stepping out to join them on violin. A Supernice suprise of a show.

The Books

Armed with miles of seemingly mundane handycam footage mixed and matched to the music and playing on a screen behind them, these guys played sitting down, to a tiny and quiet crowd, and managed to pull out one of the best shows of the night with their sincere and intense performance, super lo-fi but with a massive sound. Go see them if you can.

Sleigh Bells

To be honest I was pretty smashed by this point, but Sleigh Bells went balls out, pulled off my party hat and rearranged it into a pair of dancin’ shoes, Just the thing for this time of night and a welcome contrast to all the 90′s rocking going on, it feels great when a group gives it all for you, the crowd loved it, they loved it, I loved it. It was all happy (and very noisy) times until they finished and I skipped everthing else to piss off home.

So It´s Primavera Sound time again, last year they managed to pull off one of the better festivals on the European circuit in the midst of a crisis, here´s hoping we´re in for the same treatment this year. The lineup is huge and varied, so this list is by no means exhaustive, and there are about 1000 other bands we hope to see while we´re there, but these right here are our definites, The bands we came to see. THURSDAY 27TH MAY

The Books

19:00h – ATP Stage
Dreamlike electronic indie, comprised of singer and guitarist/bassist Nick Zammuto, cellist Paul de Jong, and hours of obscure samples. In their live show they also sync equally obscure video samples while playing, so don’t expect rock frontmanism, but rather a melancholic dream for all your senses.

Surfer Blood

19:15h – Pitchfork Stage
In a typical festival collision I´ll be ditching the books early to see Surfer Blood and their catchy guitars and hook heavy indie with a pinch of tropicana beach party. With the single “Swim” getting huge rotation last year, followed up by “take it easy” and “Floating Vibes”. Add to that that the rest of their debut album “Astro Coast” is solid as well, and all that´s left is to see how they stand up live.

The XX

21:15h – Ray-Ban Stage
The XX, what more do you need to know, 1 near perfect debut album, 4 (now 3) young Londoners that emerged from a bedroom somewhere after perfecting their sound, and one of the most anticipated shows of the festival. You´ve already heard the whole album, lamented a ruined relationship, and started looking forward to a brighter future with these guys, you probably owe them something for that, go see them live already.

Wild Beasts

23:00h – Pitchfork Stage
Romantic UK indie/art rock, melancholic and complex structures swirling around under Hayden Thorpes amazing and unique voice, make for one of my favorite albums this year, it took me a couple of spins to really get into this, but now that I am, I ain’t putting it down anytime soon.

FRIDAY 28TH MAY

Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy)

16:00h – Rockdelux Stage (Auditori)
Anyone who ever listened to a Final Fantasy record knows what to expect. Bad ass compositions, Now playing under his own name Owen weaves rich musical landscapes, a perfect way to kick off the Friday.

Harlem

18:00h – Vice Stage
You know how sometimes you go to a festival and you just wanna chill and get boozy for the first 2 hours while shooting the shit with your friends? Well the whimsical lo-fi folk that Harlem is bringing over is gonna be just perfect for that. It´s a date.

Beach House

21:40h – ATP Stage
After the first 2 CocoRoise songs, I´ll be running over here to catch Beach House as fast as I can, If the name makes you think of summer and sun, think again, this is more like a beach house in autumn with an huge dark clouds rolling in across the water and the first drops of rain exploding on the windows. Shuffling drum machines, woozy guitars, languid vocals and organs, and generally embracing and off-kilter pop

Yeasayer

02:30h – Vice Stage
Another Blogoshpere hit, Yeasayer play modern, multicultural, weird pop music, too much for some and not enough for others, be prepared to get your ears seriously involved with these guys, this is not easy listening, but if you dig it, very rewarding listening. Let´s just hope that (like our man Diplo below) the don´t suffer from Barcelona Syndrome due to that late slot.

Diplo

04:30h – Pitchfork Stage
This one could go either way, when he wants to be Diplo is smack bang on top of his game, He´s like mad scientist though, and not all of his experiments work out. I for one am really hoping the booty bass & baile funk aspects shine through and our man Diplo doesn´t succumb to the Barcelona syndrome.

SATURDAY 29th MAY

Atlas Sound

19:15h – Pitchfork Stage
Deceptively simple melodies covered with enough experimentation to made Atlas Sound one of the blogospheres favorites for 2009. Decidedly lo-fi and surprisingly rich, this will be all about sunglasses, cold beers, and recovery mode from last night.

Florence + The Machine

20:50h – San Miguel Stage
So people seem to either love or hate Florence + The Machine, Either way there´s no denying that they put on a hell of a live show. Which on the home straight of a three day festival is probably exactly what the doctor ordered to get you through to Sunday.

The Drums

21:45h – Vice Stage
Take Squeaky clean indie-pop and roll it up with yesteryear synths, electronica and tropicana, and you´ve got yourselves a good old time. The Summertime EP is in my top 5 right now, so go see them and watch them blow up to huge.

Gary Numan

00:15h – Vice Stage
Gary Numan, what else do you wanna know, If you don´t know who that is then don´t bother going, and for anyone else old, I´ll see you there.

HEALTH

03:00h – Vice Stage
Another one that could easily suffer from barcelona syndrome, When they´re doing it right Health mixes noise, distortion, and dancefloor to perfection. Could be too much on the noise end of things for alot of folks, but is one of the more interesting late night offerings this year.

Trailerpark festival: July 30, 31, August 1, 2010

TRAILERPARK FESTIVAL 2010 is a three-day Copenhagen-based music and arts festival organized by ArtRebels. It features more than a hundred people’s collective creativity and presents it in a unique way to more than 5000 happy participants.

Creating a successful festival is quite a challenge with many aspects to consider, both artistically and financially. The Kissaway Trail

Since The Kissaway Trail released their debut album in 2007 on English label Bella Union things have been going really fast, and this year they released their second album ”Sleep Mountain”. Both albums have been recieved very well, espe-cially internationally; “a savagely beautiful noise” (NME), “the debut album of the year so far” (The Independent) “mesmerising” (The Guardian), “an absolute revelation” (The Fly), “phenomenal” (Rock Sound).

For the past years The Kissaway Trail has been touring all over the world, in fact they are currently the Danish band who has played the most international concerts pr. year! SXSW, Hyde Park, support for The National, Sigur Ros, The Temper Trap and Interpol speaks for itself, and we are very happy to have them at TRAILERPARK FESTIVAL.

Sleep Party People

With his piano, guitar, an old drum machine and effect machines, Brian Batz escapes from the worries of everyday life into his slightly tilted universe of mysticism and dreams. This year in January the debut album of Sleep Party People hit the shelves, and with a music video directed by Tracy Maurice (who has previously directed for such prominent acts like Arcade Fire and Final Fantasy) and truly amazing live shows the future looks more than bright for Brian Batz & co.

Raz Ohara & Eim Ick

Raz Ohara is another Danish gem reaching (for) the stars outside the borders of Denmark. Residing in Berlin sinde 1994, Raz has released music on labels like Ellen Allien’s Bpitch Control, Kitty-Yo and Shitkatapult and has been working with artists like Apparat and his very own The Odd Orchestra. His music combines elements of soul, hiphop, electro and tech house, and at TRAILERPARK FESTIVAL Raz Ohara will perform live and solo. This is one of his rare performances in Denmark – one not to miss!

Eim Ick’s future definitely also looks bright. Young, Copenhagen-based producer Nick Eriksen creates musical landscapes combining minimal techno and deep, colorful juggling tricks. He cuts up samples and put them back together in a truly original and spellbinding way, leading your thoughts to artists like The Field and Pantha Du Prince. Debut release coming up on spanish label Hivern Discs – watch this guy closely.

The first and only time I saw Tunng was last time they played at Vega a couple of years back. It was either a Sunday or Monday show from which I expected nothing more than a standard SundayMonday show. Tunng proceeded to humbly rattle my insides and touch me in dark places I tell no-one about. I was in love. The show was so good that I even went on myspace and wrote a fan letter. And I’m over 16. I’m very very very excited that they’re making the dash – ash permitting – over the straight and blessing us with their presence once again and thanks to VME we’ve got a few extra tickets you can get.

Tunng is a crazy mix of acoustic melodies, electronic-folk and random instrument sounds including kids toys, bits and pieces found on the beach and a real live laptop or 2.

Tunngs kommende album bærer titlen …And Then We Saw Land, hvilket henviser til en fornyet rejse- og eventyrlyst, der har præget bandet i tiden op til albummets tilblivelse. Det udkommer den 1. marts og er samtidig gruppens fjerde og meget efterspurgte album.

Siden forrige album har bandets medlemmer været på både personlig og musikalsk rejse. En særligt inspirerende oplevelse var en tur til Mali med den malesiske dessert blues-gruppe Tinariwen, som udmundede i et unikt samarbejde, der banede vejen for det nye album.

Albummet er som nævnt ikke udkommet endnu, men Gaffas anmeldere har smuglyttet og skriver: ”der er tale om en lidt mere tempofyldt, elektrisk og udadvendt plade fra gruppen, der er kendt for at blande akustiske guitarer og vokalharmonier med samples og slagtøj frembragt af ting, gruppen har fundet på stranden – blandt andet muslingeskaller”.

Publikum har altså mulighed for at lytte rigtigt til albummet fra den 1. marts før koncerten i april. En koncert som tegner til at blive hyggelig - i selskab med et veloplagt og energisk band, der ikke er bange for at eksperimentere og blande indie-rock, elektronisk og britisk folk.

Either way this spot for the Nike Free Run+ by the Tokyo branch of W+K with the help of Rhizomatiks is badass, with music from breakbeat duo Hifana and sole bending madness from 4nchor5 la6 that´s right egg suckers, the shoes in the video are the real sound controllers. WANT!

To Have & to Hold is a 90 minute feature ‘musicmentary’ celebrating the vinyl age. The pilot features interviews with Chuck D, Bobbita Garcia, Questlove, Danny Krivit, Bruce ‘Bluenote’ Ludvall and others.

Where The Wild Things finally in Denmark! We’ve already seen it because we’re great world travellers and the plain fact that we have a website and a magazine means we get to see pretty much everything before you. Even if we were at the same concert I would absorb it a split second before you. Live with it. The Danish release is this Today (Thursday 8th April) at Grand! which is one of my all time favourite theatres, except actually the Embassy where I saw the NZ premier back in December.
