Yes this album is old, it’s also rather good if you like that kinda thing. Young Montana? on the other hand is not old, but young, surprisingly unconfusingly he’s not from Montana, but London. I have a crush on this album, it’s called Limerence, look it up if you don’t know what that means and you will have the added bonus of learning a new word.

Only the music can help hearing news like this.

Two thirds of Den Sorte Skole stood in a basement the last 2 years to come up with a new set. Last night at Click Festival in Helsingør, they gave their first concert ever since Roskilde Festival 2010.

What’s your name, age, and where are you from?

My name is Julian Berman and I currently inhabit Los Angeles, California. I am twenty years old.

How’re you doing man, it seems like you’ve been doing a lot of these kind of things lately?

You know what Spencer, I have been doing rather well actually. School sucks, but thankfully it is almost done. For the most part, I have just been skateboarding, going to school, and going to the goodwill practically every single day. I need to get in the grind of shooting a bit more though, especially since I have not necessarily had an interesting gig in a while.

Following your photos in the last year it seems you’ve really transitioned into shooting more commissioned work – how do you reconcile the difference between shooting for yourself or for a commission? Does your process change?

There is always that fine line between shooting for fun or a hobby, and shooting for work. I don’t know if that necessarily comes with age, or me just being lazy. Having a gig allows me to not only get my creative juices flowing, but also have a sense of creative guideline, or even a GOAL that these shots need to achieve. Besides, having your work published is badass. I still love shooting for myself, but most of the time I end up just bumming over the shots and scrapping them. In the end though, it is great to find a balance between the two.

In previous interviews you’ve been a big advocate for shooting film, but I noticed a lot of your recent photos have been from your x100, a digital camera. Have you moved away from shooting as much film, or are we just not seeing it online?

The X100 is a neat little camera. I have just been a huge fan of experimenting with different formats and mediums, and I figured it would be cool to dip back into digital for a second. To be honest, I am already over it and cannot wait to break out the Mamiya 7 again. Also, many clients and class assignments favor shooting digital for assignments, so it is a tad forced… such a shame. All in all, I will still prefer film over anything.

The city of Los Angeles definitely has a significant presence in your photos, but you also seem to get around the country quite a bit. Do you see yourself shooting in more varied locations in the future or do you plan to stick around LA?

To be honest, I am rather burnt out on shooting in Los Angeles. Maybe this is why there has not been much of an influx in new photographs lately, I guess you can call it a loss of inspiration. I absolutely adore traveling, and think that shooting photographs in a new or foreign location is the coolest thing ever. I definitely hope to travel more in the near future, that is for sure.

When you create a diptych do you shoot the photos with that kind of presentation in mind or usually decide that when editing?

The diptych is a pretty neat little trend in the current state of photography. They are definitely not too serious, and most of the time look rather silly but they can actually end up with a rather pleasing presentation. Usually I will just have two photographs that I feel would look better together, rather than taking up two posts or whatever. Other times I will actually formulate these couples prior or as I shoot, in hopes that they actually do turn out well together on the computer screen. Most of the time it does not really work, though.

Though your photos of skateboarding are few and far between, you seem to still adhere to the general aesthetic of skateboarding in a majority of your photos – do you consider yourself a skateboard photographer?

I am most definitely not a skateboard photographer, but I would LOVE to shoot some more skating. I always thought the techniques and mathematics behind shooting skateboarding were so cool, definitely far different than traditional portraiture and studio lighting. I suppose I just fell out of the skateboarding loop as a whole, the entire ‘skate crew’ started to disperse, and now it seems that nobody really skateboards anymore. Hopefully in the near future I will get back into it though, I would really enjoy that.
What direction do you see your photography going this year?

Obviously in the near future I would love to travel and complete as many jobs as possible. I will still be in school for photography, taking the same bullshit lighting and portraiture classes. I’ve got some interesting gigs coming up, so we will see what happens there. In the end, all I really need is my Mamiya 7, a flash, a brick of Portra 400, and some babes or butts or something to accomplish my goals.

It’s Record Store Day on Saturday. Hurra.

It’s a celebration of the unique culture surrounding the thousands of independently owned record stores around the world, that have brought the joy of music to our ear canals.

A Record Store Day participating store is defined as a shop based retailer whose product line consists of at least 50% music retail, whose company is not publicly traded and whose ownership is at least 70% locally owned.
(In other words, we’re talking real, live, physical, indie record stores—not online retailers or corporate behemoths).

I’m glad to say my favourite local vinyl store in Copenhagen, Sound Station, is taking part and a few of the spots in the UK…. I’ve spent way too much time and money in over the years…, Jumbo and Crash in Leeds, Rough Trade  in London and Piccadilly in Manchester.
Vinyl Exchange, also in Manchester, do not seem to be involved, as do Harold Moores Records on Great Marlborough Street in London, but they are old faves so they get a mention here.

Last Shop Standing, The Rise, the fall and the rebirth of the independent record shop is a documentary celebrating the unique spirit of comradeship and entrepreneurial ingenuity that has enabled so many record shops to keep operating, against the backdrop of massive changes in the music industry……..

and the documentary ‘Vinyl’ is a brilliant expose of about record collecting and…… maybe getting your fingers a little too dusty.

Le Fox Holes have played 2 of our release parties and most recently at Volume had half the mosh pit brawling. Possibly cos they were a bunch of fucking snotty slum-rich kids with something to prove – but either way shit was hectic. Anything goes with Jefre on the mic so if you’re into some slaying rock n’ roll, a touch of nakedness and growling guitars, then pop in to Loppen tonight.

One of the best articles from the BS11 ‘Fuck the Kids’ issue of BS Mag was an insight into Danish purveyors of ‘electric soul’  Quadron and I was blessed to experience them tear Lille Vega a new hole the other night.
After spending much of their time over the last year away from Denmark, it was clear from the start that Coco and  Robin were enjoying the glow from a partisan home crowd. They went on to deliver their repertoire with a verve and lyrical confidence that reminded all present why they have become such hot property.

When Coco hit her highest note of the evening, it seemed like every object in the Vesterbro area began vibrating and I consequently uploaded a sonic understanding of string theory through the plastic glass in my hand.
I wandered home happy and a little wiser.

What: Last year at the Thrasher SXSW showcase Odd Future member Hodgy Beats climbed onto the roof of the outdoor stage and eventually jumped out into an over-capacity crowd. This week SXSW returns for another year of new bands, rare performances and awesome tex-mex.

I’ve sent all these cats an invite for the next BS Mag almost world famous dance competition….., and before you say shit, yeah they’re all comin’……, even the guy in leg warmers and a crop top….., because he’s my all time fave.

Saturday night saw Trevor Powers bring his songs all the way from Boise, Idaho to the stage of Lille Vega. Only a guitarist joined him to accompany his synth-based tunes. The small band allowed for an intimate set; Powers keeping his banter to a minimum, admitting he wasn’t very good at it. However he was comfortable enough to divulge he was “Hot as balls” and share a harrowing tale of sleeping in the tour van earlier that day on the way to the show. He also took some time to talk about his fetish for hats, even temporarily swapping hats with a guy in the first row.

Playing songs from his first album, The Year of Hibernation, proved to be what the crowd wanted as they cheered him back on stage for an encore. The most impressive part of the show was the variety of moods the two musicians were able to create. From quiet, contemplative lines delivered over only keyboard chords to full-on jams with pounding bass. Youth Lagoon brought the goods, and now they’re heading back to the States to continue their tour.

In celebration of International Women’s Day,  on Thursday 8th March, the WOW Festival is being held between the 7-11 of March at the Southbank Centre in London.

The programme looks excellent, a feast on the achievements of women with plenty of lively debate, music and workshops to get involved with. Some highlights include:

‘Ironing it out’, a debate about whether Thatcher is a feminist icon! is sure to stir some raw emotions…. and Shami Chakrabarti will likely tell a inspiring story of women’s struggle for freedom in the ‘Women, Power and Change’ talk on Saturday at 1030.

In terms of music the ‘We are equals‘ gig sounds good, hosted by Annie Lennox and including Katy B, Jess Mills Emeli Sandé.

New to the program this year is the chance to have a 15-minute speed mentoring session and share your challenge with a range of high-level experts, from theatre directors to geoscientists.

I just got this in the inbox; a personal mail from an artist on a self-funded tour needing some local media support. I popped the tunes on and think I might have stumbled over my new favourite 1-man-band. Montreal based Jon Cohen is no stranger to good old fashioned solo touring. Knocking over 50 US and Canadian cities on the head in 1 tour after breaking from his original constellations of The Dears, and The Social Register back in 2006, Jon has hit the tarmac (and rail tracks) again and is currently bang in the middle of his UK and Euro tour. We’re lucky enough to his Jon Cohen Experimental swing by little old København on his travels where he’ll be performing big but solo at KB18 on Friday March 9th along side My French Friend. We’ll be there for sure. But for now, here’s a couple of tunes to get into.

This completely brilliant film was made by Jarbas Agnelli and Keith Loutit. Using the tilt shift method, it captures a teeny tiny Rio de Janeiro and the Carnaval from 2011, with music by Jarbas Agnelli (although it does sound very Phillip Glass by the end).

Both Jarbas Agnelli & Keith Loutit were finalists at YouTube play, a Biennial of Creative Video at the Guggenheim, the rest of the entries can be found ‘ere.

With this years Berlinale festival drawing to a close I’m wishing I’d watched more films and drank slightly less to celebrate such rich cinematic diversity, but a couple of documentaries did stick in my memory and really are worth a watch.

Side by Side is a doc that ‘investigates the history, process and workflow of both digital and photochemical film creation. Keanu Reeves interviews directors, cinematographers, colorists, scientists, engineers and artists to reveal their experiences and feelings about working with film and digital formats.

Marley is a completely dope film on the life, music, and legacy of Bob Marley with, as you might think, a bunch of new footage and material never seen before.
The film takes a chronological approach, from his 1940s childhood of desperate poverty in the mountains of Jamaica after his black mother is abandoned by his white father, Captain Norval Marley. The bastard!.
Although.., saying that I reckon just the name ‘Norval‘… makes me think Bob might have dodged a bullet early on in life, although that bullet did sadly catch up with him at a later date.

Wellman Braud was the bassist who played such an important role with Ellington from
1926-’35, providing a solid beat and strength of rhythm that are a beat makers wet dream.
