Kødboderne 18 is now closed so the the new venue is Bakken. A hipster bar with ample space for you to wobble your legs, bounce your ass and throw your hands opposite the ground. You can buy some Brazilian candy if you get drained by all the bailefunk provided by, amongst others, DJ Edgar. He is one of Brazil’s hottest favela DJs – and he’ll be poking his drum-machine on which he is an absolute master.

A friend of mine invited me to Berlin. Unemployed, and therefore having all the time in the world, I said yes.

I didn’t really read anything about Berlin before the 5-day long trip. Knowing there was a lot of streetart, hip clubs and cool abandoned places I felt ready. But the reality was kinda different. First when we got there I realised that Berlin wasn’t as small as Copenhagen. We had to choose between hitting the nearest bookshop, finding a guide, or simply just take a walk. We choose walking. 9 hours of straight walking the first day. 5 hours of walk the next and again 9 hours marathon-walking thursday. Fucked feet.
So – here you go, I’ll do you all a favour and hook you up with some of the most awesome places we saw in Berlin.

I needed a new cap. We ran into the New Era flagship store at the address “An der Spandauer Brücke 7″ (ze germans.. damn).
Miles and miles of colour-sorted caps covering the massive walls. Even if you’re not into caps, go there – it’s quite an impressive sight.

You should also go to Kastanienallee – there’s loads of awesome shops, some are payable, others are not.

Eating in Berlin is fun. You can always grab a döner kebap around the corner.

Or mobile hot dogs.

On our way to Kastanienallee we walked down Johannistrasse, lots of cool galleries! Buddha is a restaurant on Johannistrasse – great indian food is served here and for only 5-6 euros you’ll get a plate stuffed with either rice or bread and chicken or lam.

If the picture above makes your mouth horny, go to Monbijoustrasse, find a place called Strandbar Mitte – right next to the river. Just left of the bar you’ll find a dancing pizzadude. He only makes 7 or 8 different pizzas – but that’s more than enough. Try the pizza parma, and look at him dancing to oldschool 80′s hits while you’re flushing down an ice-cold Peroni.. that’s how we roll!

Skating in Berlin is also possible. There are some minor spots around the city, don’t know where this was – but it was right next to a playground with gravel, so it’s not that great anyway. Otherwise you should go to Cassiopeia. It’s an old train-depot featuring a biergarten, outdoor cinema, wall-climbing on a former water-tower, 2 clubs playing everything between hardcore electro and hiphop – and oh yeah, you can also find the Berlin Skatehalle here.

-When you get tired of skating, just take a chill on the vert.

I guess that was it. Take a walk yourself – explore Berlin and get lost on your own, find some awesome streetart and get a couple of new friends.

Formed in Perloja, Lithuania in 1978 and disbanded in 1981, the Strange Tree Animation Company existed in a theoretical period of cultural shift which was coined as the ‘Tilt Era’ by Nathan Daniel. During this turbulent but fruitful four years the Keista Medis managed to produce only one finished cartoon.

This exhibition features previously unseen animation cells, stills and press work which were feared lost until their recent discovery in a stately home in the former Soviet state. These loose and often quite random images are believed to be from a number of uncompleted animations that were being worked on at the time of the studio’s prompt closure. The cartoons were written and directed by Steponas Uemov and Juozapas Skupas and the works featured in this show are presumed to be by Ramunas Murowski and Luidvikas Stogis, the chief animators who were responsible for visual creation, character design, backgrounds and colour testing.





The remnants that survive of the Strange Tree Animation Company provide an insight into the creative aims of the company’s artists. Fragments of stories allude to lost narratives but little remains to provide direction on the intended ordering of these fragments. Consequently, the viewer of this collection is left to construct their own storyline. A small amount of information has survived in the form of an incomplete collection of private correspondence between Skupas and his secret German lover. In these letters Skupas clearly states that the cartoons were aimed at children and that they attempt to offer alternate views to the theological and political ideals that their creators were raised on. It appears that the cartoons were an attempt to subliminally broaden the mind of the next generation.


The Keista Medis’ patron was Prince Otto Wilhelm who, according to rumour, was insane. His penchant for castle building and an insistence on traveling only in solid gold carriages put an extraordinary strain on the Prince’s finances which eventually led to financial ruin and the death of the Strange Tree Cartoon Company. The only completed work was a 30 second trailer which was shown, for the first and only time, to the Prince and a party of young revelers at Geierstein Castle, Perloja in 1981.





The works in this show have been kindly loaned by the Estate of Prince Otto Wilhelm and have been carefully compiled by Russell Maurice and Daniel Sparkes, enthusiasts and collectors of obscure animation art. This show approaches the cartoon with a modern eye and questions if it is time to review attitudes towards the art form. In the words of Augustus Parker: “Discussing the cartoon as Low Brow is no longer relevant. Now it is used as a simplification, a short hand description, a language society needs now.”

I’d just like to share with you some of the work from our good friend, filmmaker and Bitchslap contributing photographer René Johannsen. He’s been pissing around with film for a while now and besides winning a bunch of awards for documentary and music stuff, he’s made some of the freshest hip hop videos for LOC and the Suspekt dudes. These days he’s banging out a series called Asphalt as well as the regular freelance stuff.

Go to the DR Asphalt channel to check out the clips and get pumped on using the city in a different way. Here’s one of my favs.

If you’re in Amsterdam then go check this out would ya? The last exhibition at the YOUR:OWN gallery will be coming from the English artist Joe Holbrook. For the last half year Joe Holbrook has been living in Amsterdam, using the city as a new palette, and getting in touch with the creative scene. One of the projects Joe has been involved in was the YOUR:OWN gallery. Together with Jeroen Smeets, he co-curated the artists in the gallery, as a way to reach out to new artists, and get fresh inspiration and influences. For his new exhibition titled ‘Three is a crowd’, the original idea was to portray each artist that exhibited in the gallery. But instead of focusing on portraits, Joe decided to focus on the moments spend in and around the gallery. Hereby capturing the creative energy of the gallery and it’s artists through his own eyes.

The new exhibition of Joe Holbrook will be showing a series of new oil paintings. A technique which Joe studied and developed over the last few months. Which make for “the best paintings I have ever done” according to himself. Besides the oil paintings there will be a series of drawings on paper on display.

This summer, California Skateparks brought The World’s Largest Skateboard to Camp Woodward PA. One afternoon, campers and staff took the enormous skateboard out for a ride. Late in the day, California Skateparks owner, Joe Ciaglia decided to take his creation for a solo ride.

It is a great pleasure to present Brush Strokes – an exhibition by Todd James (US) and Lydia Fong (US) aka Barry McGee. Their seminal exhibition Street Market – with Stephen Powers that premiered at Deitch Projects in NYC and travelled on as part of the American contribution to the 2001 Venice Biennale – changed the American art map permanently.

A new group of American artists entered the arena with a novel approach to contemporary art and an innovative visual language. A group rooted in skateboarding, graffiti, surfing and underground music. Many critics and writers have tried to bracket and label this group of artists as Beautiful Losers, Lowbrow or the Mission School; none of these labels seem quite adequate. We like to refer to them simply as artists.

Todd James is from the east coast. His works on paper and canvas reflect on contemporary issues, such as the dilemmas of consumer culture, should we buy Chanel or Gucci, should we invade Iraq or Iran, should we do it for democracy or treasure. Old power hungry men with crude skulls, busty ladies smoking cigarettes, aircraft carriers, fountains of blood and buckets of gold round dance together in a bright palette. His poetic, dynamic and distinctly humorous style engages the mundane and the extraordinary at eye level, creating room for instinctive reflection. Todd James is a New Yorker to the bone and his works carry a dry NYC wit.

Lydia Fong is from San Francisco on the west coast. He works in a wide variety of media, paintings on wood, drawing, photography and sculpture. Barry McGee’s unmistakable artistic style is a mix of delicate drawings, strict geometrical systems, bold statements and photos documenting him self and his friends or fellow artists working in the streets. His work is influenced by, and reflects upon contemporary society, especially those that tend to be left behind by it, or choose not to play by its rules. In his work destruction and chaos go hand in hand with beauty and tenderness, just like in the real world beyond the gallery walls.

The title of the exhibition “Brush Strokes” is elegantly lifted from the notorious renegade art TV-show that aired on Manhattan public access TV, which in a humorous way interacted with the New York art scene. Brush Strokes is still available on You Tube. Todd James and Lydia Fong have exhibited widely throughout the world, from galleries and museums to public walls in cities of all sizes.

This will be the first collaboration between Todd James and Lydia Fong since they worked together on the travelling museum exhibition Beautiful Losers, curated by Aaron Rose, now also available as a book and a documentary film of the same name. We are excited and honored to present Brush Strokes and look forward to celebrating the opening with you and the artists.

We will be stopping at chosen locations to sell passes to Trailerpark Festival, take a break and enjoy a beer in the sun.
